Is it just me, or does almost everyone you meet at the moment seem to be born under the Virgo star?
They come in many shapes and sizes, Virgos. Maybe because they are a mutable (adaptable sign)…
It doesn’t matter if I am online, or in person; somewhere, somehow, each day I come in contact with a Virgo, so much so that I feel like I am studying them!

Put like that, they sound pretty awesome, these Virgos, don’t they? (Even with the odd ‘so-called’ negative trait) And they can be! As well as a mixed bag. Like a virgin – from Mother Teresa to Madonna (who has her Moon in Virgo).
It’s true that the attention seems firmly on Virgo right now. During the summer, there have been so many shifts in health and wealth – all so very Virgo, and so very Mercury Retrograde (in Virgo!)
We have had to restart or re-do so much.
2023 has been an incredible and powerful life-changing year, with so much change on the horizon – and that’s where it’s stayed. On the horizon. Whilst we’ve been stuck on the treadmill – sometimes in reverse.
I’ve had this exact feeling, somewhat literally.
One day in July, I was late to an important meeting, and using every ounce of energy I had, busting a gut to get there, while everyone else strolled leisurely ahead of me! I couldn’t believe how much I felt I was on that treadmill – in reverse. I was at the time, two weeks away from having my second hip replacement, and in that moment it hit me, just how much I had been struggling on – and how much I needed it.
Retrogrades are all about the ‘re,’ so having my second hip ‘re’placement in a Mercury Retrograde might be a time when you think ‘Oh no what could go wrong!’ – I’m very pleased I didn’t see it that way. ‘Re’ things fit perfectly!
Embrace the Cosmic Flow
Trusting the stars knows it’s all happening as it should when it should, and leaving everything as it is, is a practice in life, and especially during Retrogrades. Instead of thinking ‘Eek! I need to cancel everything!”- try thinking ‘Oh that’s interesting!’
Recovery and Reflection
My second replacement was better than my first, and yes, Virgo rules health in my house of health! So no wonder I am spending the Virgo season getting my health back!
With this New Moon, the treadmill changes direction.
Personally, the Virgo New Moon and Mercury direct in Virgo marks a significant post-surgery milestone. Time to strip off the compression stockings, stop the blood thinners, have a shower, and drive again!
Hence marking a time when I will need to ‘re’commit to my diet and exercise regime, but this time with a bigger and better start than I have ever been equipped for before.
The two-week period between this New Moon and the Full Moon in Aries on the 29th feels packed with energy to get on with and manifest a new start – even with Pluto, Neptune, Saturn, Chiron, Uranus, and Jupiter retrograde!
This is because all the personal planets will now be direct, so while the big wide world is going through retro flux, at least personally, we can make some progress. The treadmill has finally switched on the right way. The change may still feel on the horizon, but at least we will feel we are getting stronger and going in the right direction.
So, by the time the go-getting energy of the fiery Aries Full Moon pops on the 29th (the last moon of the current eclipse cycle), we will be able to take a final look back at the last six months and see how much has actually happened and how much we really have achieved.

The Pentacles in Tarot are tangible, representing the earth element of Virgo. The Eight of Pentacles hammers the hardworking tangible aspect of Virgo home each September when the Sun moves into Virgo, and the kids return to school – and their parents to work.

The Hermit: Virgo’s Wise and Kooky Ruler
And right now, we have the ruler of Virgo, Mercury himself, retrograde, and ready to go direct the day after this new Moon in Virgo. In the Tarot, this has to be none other than the eccentric but wise and kooky card of The Hermit.
Out there on the fringe of society, somewhat removed, so that he can serve with an insight not available to those within the goldfish bowl.
A Real-Life Hermit: Eden Ahbez
Only this morning, I read a Facebook post about a real-life Hermit:
Eden Ahbez lived in a cave under the Hollywood sign in 1947. He had shoulder-length hair, a beard, wore sandals and a white robe, subsisted on a diet of vegetables, fruits, and nuts, and lived on a mere three dollars a week.
One night he tried to give Nat King Cole a song sheet backstage at a concert. When stopped by a police officer, he stated:
“I look crazy but I’m not. And the funny thing is that other people don’t look crazy but they are.”
Cole tracked him down in New York City, where Ahbez was living – literally in Central Park itself, and eventually, he made his way to Nat King Cole’s concert in Los Angeles, where he presented him with “Nature Boy.”
It’s unclear why he chose Cole, but rumours suggested that he emerged from hiding due to growing awareness of racism and world troubles, seeing Cole as the ideal messenger for his message.
Ahbez had a profound philosophy about love and humanity, stating,
“Some white people hate black people, and some white people love black people, some black people hate white people, and some black people love white people. So you see it’s not an issue of black and white, it’s an issue of Lovers and Haters.”
The Mystical Power of “Nature Boy”
His message of love found its way into his music, resonating deeply with the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Author Raymond Knapp described “Nature Boy” as a “mystically charged vagabond song,” capturing the essence of loss and helplessness, with its final line delivering an indestructible and salvaged universal truth:
“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”
In 2009, the lyrics of “Nature Boy” were recited before the Vermont House of Representatives during the passage of the state’s same-sex marriage bill, emphasizing the song’s enduring relevance.
The Wanderer with Archetypal Power
Naturally, the media, captivated by the enigmatic man who presented Nat King Cole with one of the era’s biggest hits uncovered more about his mysterious background. What they unearthed was a life marked by impermanence. Born an orphan, he never found a lasting home, moving through a series of foster families. His sense of not quite fitting in and a constant search for something more defined his existence.

During this moon, everything I have spoken about above rains down on the earth through a portal – it’s all up for the planting.
